This is primarily a fact finding phase. It is a good idea to limit this activity to fact finding and save processing for the tactical conference phase. Diagnosis may be simple and easily confirmed or it may be difficult. A thorough exam is recommended even when the case appears simple. Data collected as early in the disease process may become invaluable later in the process for comparative purposes. Two items requiring special consideration are lamellar biopsy and radiography. Lamellar biospy reveals the current condition of the laminae. It is a simple easily performed procedure. Proper preparation of the hoof for radiography will exponentially increase the amount of data available from the radiograph.
